Employment

New York currently offers skills training in green construction, light maintenance, office operations, and medical information technology. Participants must first complete four weeks of Attitudinal and Job Readiness training to be eligible for any of these training programs. All skills training clients also receive case management, job placement, and two years of follow-up assistance. The occupational training programs we offer are described below:

Green Construction

Green construction programs are full-time, eight-week courses taught by ANDO International and Solar One, New York-based accredited environmental training organizations. The training includes the following components:

  • Basic construction: covers electrical, plumbing, and carpentry, as well as a building management module that introduces students to the techniques used to maximize the economic and environmental performance of buildings
  • Brownfield remediation: this results in four New York State Brownfield Remediation certifications of 1) 32-hour Asbestos Abatement Handler, 2) OSHA 16-hour Confined Space, 3) OSHA 10-hour Construction Health and Safety, and 4) 40-hour HAZWOPER: Hazardous Materials Handling
  • Weatherization: teaches energy audits, air leak testing, insulation, and building retrofitting
  • SolarP/V Panels Installation: introduces students to the basic principles of solar systems, structural design aspects, and PV installation techniques, resulting in the NABCEP Solar PV Installer Certification

Green Building Maintenance

STRIVE’s Green Building Maintenance Skills Training Program is a unique course that prepares participants for careers in the green energy building and maintenance field. This 10 week training program introduces students to: 1) Renovations; 2) Painting & Repairs; 3) Weatherization, Retrofitting and Energy Auditing.

The program begins with 4 weeks of STRIVE’s CORE training – a workshop focused on soft skills, career development, job readiness, customer service, and civics. Participants will earn their OSHA 10 Health and Safety certification, as well have the opportunity to learn retrofitting, renovation, repair and painting, energy auditing, weatherization, and Green Building fundamentals.

This is a free work program and you must be between 18 and 45 years old and physically fit. Additionally, participants must have minimum Math and Reading levels of the 8th grade.

Office Operations

The Office Operations program teaches students the skills they need in today’s office place. A five-week, full-time training, it is taught on-site at STRIVE by instructors from local partner Committed to Computers. This courseincludes advanced Customer Service training, Business Operations Overview, Business Math Essentials, Data Entry, Typing, Receptionist Training and certifications in the Microsoft Office Suite.

Participants will work with the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook) achieving an intermediate level of expertise. In addition, participants gain proficiency in typing (40 wpm) and data entry, knowledge of filing, and extensive customer service training including phone etiquette and handling the difficult client. Participants improve basic analytical skills, build multi-tasking abilities, enhance interpersonal skills, and learn to improve attention to detail.

At the end of the program, participants sit for the licensing examination for Microsoft Office Suite certification. In many of our cohorts, STRIVE places participants in an office internship to gain entry level experience.

Medical Information Technology

The 2-Track Medical Information Technician Program combines GED preparation, Office Operations and Medical Billing. The Medical Information Technician consists of 6 weeks of Office Operations and 8 weeks of Medical Billing where participants are trained in compiling, processing, and maintaining medical records of hospital and clinic patients in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements of the heath care system. The GED Track provides and additional 7 months of GED preparation. Participants who pass the GED test, then receive 6 weeks of Office Operations and 8 weeks of Medical Billing training.
